Sunday Snapshot

We went to a camp party this weekend and I had the chance to practice my action photography out on the water.  These pictures are of my brother-in-law and one of our friends.  I am proud of myself for taking all of them in manual!  The conditions were ever changing on the boat so that made it slightly difficult but I had fun trying.

This last photo that I am sharing today is of a rare snuggle between my husband and daughter. She is a very independent little girl already and doesn't like to snuggle often, so we cherish every chance we get!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Friday Favorites

Yay for Friday!  I think I might actually get some crafting time this weekend as well as a much needed evening out with my husband!

Here are my 5 favorites from the week:

1. Chocolate and peanut butter!  This combination seems to be everywhere in my food life right now.  First I found Peanut Butter Oreos then I found Hood's Mt. Washington Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup ice cream and both are SO YUMMY!  Ignore the nutrition facts in those links...cookies and ice cream don't have calories :)

2. I have recently found printed Duck brand duct tape and now I have been trying to find projects to do to use it.  My last project was converting a diaper box to a storage box for books and I love how it came out, so easy and so cheap!

3. I have been cruising the blogging world quite a bit lately and doing a lot of reading.  I am going to round out my 5 favorites with a few of them.

Nowhere to go but Crazy, I love this blog name as much as I love this photography blog

4. U Create, so many cute tutorials and a great place to get some inspiration.

5. Nap Time Crafters, another great place for tutorials and inspiration.  I also link up some of my projects here for the Friday Favs Parties.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Diaper Box to Cute Storage Box

We have been using an old cardboard diaper box to store some books for our son in our living room for a few weeks now but it was UGLY!  I finally decided that if it was going to permanently live in the living room, it needed to be fixed.  I had seen the printed Duck Tapes in my local Target and decided that I could use that to make my box cute and more sturdy, double duty!

The box I used is 9.5" wide, 11.5" long and 9.5" tall.  I wanted my pattern to line up as I went around, so I probably used a bit more than if you didn't care about that, but I used one full roll of Duck Tape (10 yards).  Depending on what you use for a box, get for tape and how the pattern lines up you could use more or less.

See what I mean? UGLY!
The first thing I did was to cut the flaps off the top of the box and then I taped up the flaps for the hand holds (I didn't want to cut them off because they will help keep the holes sturdy and less likely to cut into your hands when you carry it).

I also put a couple of strips of tape on the bottom of the inside of the box to hold down the inside flaps.  Then I began wrapping the box with tape starting on the bottom.  I wanted it to go over the bottom edge of the box so I just cut a slit on the corners so that the tape would lay flat.

I just kept wrapping the box, one strip at a time until I covered the whole box.  I tried to line up the dots so that everything looked even once I was done. Once I got to the top of the box, I did the same thing I did with the bottom of the box, I cut a slit at each corner and then wrapped the tape over the raw edge of the box.  I taped over the hand holes and then using a sharp knife, I cut slits in the tape so that I could wrap over the raw edge of the holes.

I cut the tape along the red lines
After that, I did one more row of tape along the inside edge of the box and then one strip down the middle of the bottom of the box.  I am very happy with how it came out and it only cost me about $4!

The finished product and my puppy dog checking it all out :)

Weekend Recap

Well, I had hoped to get some crafting done this weekend but the only crafting I got done was some microwave baking.

My husband and I were supposed to have a date night Friday night but he got stuck at work until late and then had to go back in early Saturday morning for a full day of work.  My mom ended up taking my son overnight to help me out a bit and to spend time with her favorite grandson of course!  So instead of a nice dinner out with just my husband, my night was spend in front of the TV with a 2 minute mug brownie while my daughter slept.

In case you have never heard of these mug brownies, here is a link to the one I found on Pinterest.  I love that I can make just this and not have to make a whole pan of brownies that I know I will end up eating by myself because my husband does not have the sweet tooth that I do.  It is really good topped with ice cream!  There are other mug deserts out there too if you look for them.  I have also tried this single serving deep dish chocolate chip cookie from My Happy Place

On Saturday my daughter and I just had a girls day and made a visit to the jewelry store to get my rings cleaned and inspected and to get my watch battery changed.  Then we made a visit to the mall just so that we could take a little walk in air conditioning (we both hate the heat).  When she napped, I cleaned.  My husband picked up our son from my mom and they got home just in time to put the kids to bed.  We had dinner and then went to bed ourselves.

Sunday was some much needed family time for us.  We are currently looking for a new house so we spent some of our day driving around looking at some of the houses we found online.  Not only did we like the looks of a few of them, we ended up finding a few others for sale that we liked as well.  After everyone else went to bed, I spent a few hours in the evening catching up on folding laundry and then updating here on my blog before I went to bed.

Maybe I will get lucky this week and the kids will nap at the same time and I will get some time to do some afternoon crafts.  I hope everyone had a great weekend with plans for a great week!

Friday Favorites

1. I cloth diaper my kids (well, mostly just my daughter now since my son has somehow developed very sensitive skin and now breaks out in a rash when he is in cloth but that's another story) and I have found a new favorite diaper!  I have liked Flip diapers since my son started in cloth but I have a new found love for them with my daughter.  They had been a bit wide between her legs for a while but they are really starting to fit her well now.  They are my go to cover for night time.  I stuff them with an angel folded GMD prefold and we are good to go!  Plus I am in love with the new girly print and colors from Flip!  They are great for these hot days because I can just put a coordinating shirt with the diaper and there is no need for more clothes!

Just add a cute dress or shirt!
2. Make It and Love It posted a tutorial this week on how to make little girls long sleeve shirts into short sleeve shirts with flutter sleeves and I am so excited to try it!  My kids were "blessed" with their parents long arms so they sometimes outgrow long sleeve shirts in the sleeves before anything else so this is brilliant for us!

3. My best friend posted some pictures that she took of my sons birthday party and I love them!  Her blog, Create Something Out of Nothing, is all about her journey behind the lens and she has posted some very creative shots, check her out and let her know I sent you.

4. True smiles caught on camera

5. Toothless baby grins

Project Planning

I am hoping to be able to get some sewing done this weekend, so I have been thinking about what projects I want to work on.  I have a few more shirts that I want to try to make something out of.

The two on the left are women's polo shirts and the one on the right is a kids t-shirt.  I am going to try to do something with sleeves and hopefully another dress with an internal onesie.

The fabric on the left is flannel and the one on the right is a bubble minky.  I am hoping to use them to make a blanket and maybe a smaller security blanket (maybe 14" x 14").

This last fabric, I am thinking I am going to make myself a camera strap cover.  I will use a brown bubble minky for the backing.  I think I am going to try to add a small pocket to one end of the strap so that I can put my lens cover in it.  I tend to leave them laying around and am very lucky to not have lost one yet.  I think I might try to add some sort of closure to the pocket too, but I'm not sure what kind of closure yet (Velcro, a button or maybe a snap).

If naps go well the rest of the week, I will try to get some of this stuff cut out so that I can get more done this weekend.  Hopefully I will have some projects to share with you next week!  Wish me luck :)

Sunday Snapshot: Birth Minute

This past week was my son's actual 2nd birthday and last year I started a tradition of taking a picture of him on his birth minute every year.  Last year he was napping and this year he was watching an airplane fly over the house.

This is also the most I have done in post processing to enhance a picture, so I would love any feed back you might have for me.  Here is the SOOC so that you can compare.  This photo was taken with my Nikon D3100 and the camera settings were F1.8 1/1600 ISO3200.

Hope you had a great weekend!

Friday Favorites

It's been a bit of a rough day here but instead of dwelling on the bad, I am going to focus on the good and hope that naps cure the grumpies!

1. Homemade chocolate sauce for ice cream!  This has been a favorite of mine since I was little.  My Mom used to make this sauce for my brother and I as a treat every once in a while.  It is warm, gooey and so good!  The best part is it only takes a couple of minutes to put together.  If you want to try it for yourself here is the very simple recipe:

Homemade Chocolate Sauce
1/2 cup sugar
2-1/4 teaspoon cocoa
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons milk
1/4 teaspoons vanilla

Combine sugar, cocoa, butter and milk and bring to a boil.  Boil for 1 minute.  Remove from heat and add vanilla.  Serve warm over ice cream and enjoy!

I had intended to take a picture of a mug FULL of ice cream and sauce but my
stomach took over and devoured it before I could get my camera out, oops :)
2.  I am in love with the fabric choices in this Etsy shop.  I have ordered a wet bag and some wipes from their other shop and they have held up great and are so cute.

3. I am a sucker for the ABC shows The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.  The latter is on right now and there are only a couple of weeks left before Emily picks the man of her dreams!  This is the first season where I have liked all of the final 4 guys but I do have to say I was a little disappointed that she let Sean go so soon!  I thought for sure he would have made it to the final 2.  Oh well, maybe if we are lucky, he will be the next Bachelor!  As for the end of this season, I think I am now on team Jef!

4. Speaking of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, I am excited for the new season of Bachelor Pad to start soon!  I told you I was a sucker.

5. I just finished reading Sisterhood Everlasting by Ann Brashares.  It is the fifth book in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.  I read the first 4 when they came out about 10 years ago.  I loved them and could relate to the 4 girls in the book and the friendship they had because I was going through some of the same things.  This fifth book was just published last year and is about those same 4 girls, 10 years later.  So once again, I can relate to the things they are going through as they approach 30.  Their friendships have changed, as any friendship does as you get older.  I loved reading about where their lives had taken them.  I couldn't wait to see how it ended, but at the same time, I didn't want it to end.  It is like watching a good movie or tv series, you want it to keep going so you can continue to see where their lives go.  I sincerely hope that there will be another book (or books) somewhere down the road, maybe every 10 years, so we can continue to check in on the girls (well women now) as they approach 40 and beyond.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Party Time

This past weekend, we celebrated our sons second birthday with a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse birthday party.  Here are a few pictures from our day.

My husband and son happen to share a birthday so I started the birthday party with father/son birthday squirt guns and they were a big hit.  It was about 90 degrees out and the little birthday boy got away with squirting just about everyone and every thing.

I had hoped to have red frosting for the cupcakes but very quickly learned how hard it is to make red frosting from scratch.

Levi loves Mickey Mouse and when he saw the Mickey Mouse candle, he decided it needed a hug.  He tried to eat his cupcake while hugging the candle but determined that it was not an easy task, so he set him down and proceeded to only eat the frosting!

Levi received so many nice toys and books.  He loves to read and had to take a break from opening presents to read one of the new books he got.

He had some quiet time reading with his Grammie toward the end of the party.  He spent quite a bit of time in his new sandbox and pool throughout the party as well.  They were both big hits with the other kids that came too.

Lily spend the beginning and end of the party sleeping and only a bit of time in the middle of the party socializing.  She does not like the heat!

We had a great day and are so thankful to everyone that came and helped to make Levi's birthday party so much fun!

T-Shirt to Baby Dress

I had some old t-shirts that I loved but either no longer fit or had some sort of stain on them.  The fabric has that soft, worn-in feel to it so I decided that they would be perfect for re-purposing into little sun dresses for my daughter.  I just found a dress that I liked the fit of and lined it up with the bottom hem of the shirt and cut about 1/2" bigger around the other sides.  Then I sewed up the sides and the shoulders.  Since it is a knit, you don't have to worry about it fraying so I just left the neck and arm holes raw.

This was the first one that I made and it is made out of a shirt that I actually wore when I was pregnant with her.

I made the second one a little longer and I think that it's wide enough that as she grows, we will be able to use it as a tank top instead of a dress.

Here is another one of her wearing the first one just for fun.
