Sunday Snapshot: Birth Minute

This past week was my son's actual 2nd birthday and last year I started a tradition of taking a picture of him on his birth minute every year.  Last year he was napping and this year he was watching an airplane fly over the house.

This is also the most I have done in post processing to enhance a picture, so I would love any feed back you might have for me.  Here is the SOOC so that you can compare.  This photo was taken with my Nikon D3100 and the camera settings were F1.8 1/1600 ISO3200.

Hope you had a great weekend!

What a cutie pie!

If you lower the shutter speed to 1/250 (which captures action very well) you could also lower the ISO so you don't get noise…but it's a great photo, I love it :)

Thanks for the comment and tip Penelope. Sometimes I do have my shutter speed excessively fast which in turn unnecessarily hurts the quality of my photos. I need to remember to keep an eye on that and adjust my ISO before I adjust my shutter speed.

Such a sweet shot! His eyes are just beautiful!

As for my .02 - you might want to shoot with a bit narrower aperture, maybe 2.8 to 3.2. It's a LOT easier to hit the focus when you're not shooting quite so wide open. And be sure to put the focal point on the eyes... especially eyes as beautiful as his :)

Thank you for the feedback Stefanie! I am still learning about shooting in manual and I need to remember to slow down sometimes and try to figure out what the most important setting is and not just automatially go for the aperature if I need more or less light. I just learned about putting the focus point on the eyes when I got my new DSLR in November. I used to put it on my subjects nose (I guess because thats the center of the face) but the eyes make so much more sense. I guess I hadn't really thought about it before.
