Guest Post: From Couch to Ironwoman

Early last fall, I decided that I wanted to do a 5K and I decided to recruit a couple of my friends to do it with me.  We decided that we would follow the Couch-to-5K Running Plan for our training.  Our goal is to do the EMMC Champion the Cure Challenge in August 2013.  None of us really enjoy running (and maybe this program will change that) but we liked the idea of getting back into some sort of fitness routine after having kids.  We decided that an end goal of participating in an actual race would help to motivate us.

Both of these friends are now pregnant and only one of them is going to be able to do it with me now (the other will be busy snuggling a couple week old baby) but we are still looking forward to participating.  Now that spring is officially here and warmer weather is quickly approaching, I am looking forward to starting my Couch-to-5K journey. I will be updating our journey here on the blog throughout the spring, summer and fall.  To help me kick it off, and as a little jump start to my motivation, I would like to welcome the woman behind From Couch to Ironwoman, Jamie...

Hi everyone! I’m Jamie and I blog at From Couch to Ironwoman. I was honored that Danielle wanted me to write a guest post on her blog about how I got started with my running/triathlon journey. We actually know each other from high school and thanks to the wonderful world of Facebook we have been able to stay connected with each other.

I’m not sure if Danielle has mentioned this on her blog yet or not, but she is going to be running her first 5K this year! My husband, Mike, and I started our journey with running (and ultimately triathlons) almost two years ago. I had seen the Couch-to-5K (C25K) program mentioned by a few Facebook friends and I was intrigued.

I never thought that I could run as an adult, I did run cross country when I was younger but only through my freshman year of high school. I actually used the excuse that it hurt my knees, which it did at first, to get out of running while on the swim team in college. Mike and I met through swimming, we were both swimmers from a young age through college, but we had grown inactive after we stopped competitively swimming. The C25K program seemed like the perfect solution!

I’m not going to lie, it was hard. Maybe not at first when the walk increments heavily outweighed the run increments, but I did have problems with my knees and ankles in the beginning (that’s where having the right shoes comes in handy). I complained constantly, it didn’t help that we started running at the end of April and then into the summer, but we made it to our first 5K! We crossed the finish line together in 32 minutes and even though I have a 5K PR (personal record) of 25:36, that is still one of my proudest moments.

Even before we ran our first 5K, we were hooked. We had huge plans for ourselves, an Ironman, and finishing that 5K solidified that this is what we should be doing. Mike and I have done over 30 races since our first race and there are plenty more to come!

Looking back on our journey that includes numerous half marathons, sprint triathlons, a duathlon, a few relays and a marathon, it is hard to believe that it started out with alternating 60 seconds of “jogging” and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes.

This year we hope to run a few more marathons, we are currently training for the Cleveland Marathon, and complete a 70.3 triathlon (we’re currently training for that too). I also have plans for a 60K ultra in the fall. Even though Facebook has somewhat invaded our lives, if it wasn’t for my friends’ statuses about the C25K we may never have started this amazing journey that we are on.

I’m excited for Danielle and I can’t wait to follow her journey, I hope she loves it as much as I do!

Go check out Jamie on her blog and on Facebook and let her know I sent you!  She has some serious plans for the next year and I am looking forward to following her journey as well!  I am hoping that I have as successful a journey as she has had!

Friday's Letters

I am going to try something new this week for my Friday post, I think it will be a fun way to end the week.

A few iPhone shots from my week (edited with the trial version of the
RadLab plug-in for Photoshop and pieced together with PicMonkey)
Dear Friday, This has been a long week, please be nice to me!  Dear Lauren, Thank you for being one of my biggest cheerleaders!  I would not have this blog or my shop if it weren't for your encouragement.  I can't wait for this weekend!  I am ready for a little girl time.  Dear Greg, I am so glad you are home, the kids and I missed you!  Dear Mother Nature, the first day of spring is not supposed to be spent moving 15" of snow, I want spring weather so I can walk outside!  Dear Mom, Dad and MIL, Thank you for watching the kids this weekend so that we can go visit our friends who live too far away!  Dear Totally Rad, I am loving PicTapGo app for editing photos on my phone and RadLab photoshop plug-in for editing photos in Photoshop on my computer!  They are great for this visual learner/editor!  Now I need to save my pennies so that I can buy RadLab when my 14 day trial runs out...  Dear Kelly from Eat Yourself Skinny, Thank you for the recipe for the Better-than-Chipotle Bowl (as seen in the upper right photo)!  It was healthy and so flavorful, I was kind of glad that I was the only one home that would eat it!

Little Things: Father-Daughter

This picture melts my heart, I loved watching the 2 of them together.  He was brushing her hair out of her eyes as they were playing on the floor together.  She has her Daddy wrapped around her little finger :)

Create 2 for Tuesday: Green

Welcome to week 3 of Create 2 for Tuesday!

This link-up is co-hosted by Lauren from Create Something out of Nothing.  You can read more about it here.

This week's prompt is Green, here are my 2 interpretations:

John Deere Green...doesn't get much more green than that :)

If you know Lauren, you know that the prompt this week was something she came up with because
she loves green!  So I decided that one of my photos had to have something to do with her.  This is my
half of a set of prints that I bought for Lauren (my bff), it's kind of a modern day bff necklace or bracelet.
You can read more about it on her blog, here.

Welcome to week 2 of Create 2 for Tuesday that I co-host with Lauren from Create Something out of Nothing.  You can read more about it here.  This week's prompt is Spring.

Here are my 2 interpretations:

Spring in Maine = Mud Season

Being above freezing is another great sign of spring
